OEM Cleaning Products: A Distributor’s Guide to Private Label Success

Building your own cleaning product brand is the single highest-margin move a distributor can make. Instead of selling someone else’s brand at 15-25% margin, you sell your own brand at 40-60% margin — with full pricing control and no risk of your supplier competing in your market.

But OEM has a reputation for being complicated. It does not have to be. Here is how it works with JOBY.

The OEM Process: 5 Steps from Idea to Container

Step 1: Formula Selection (Week 1) You tell us your market and target price point. Our 100+ R&D team recommends a base formula. You can adjust fragrance, viscosity, active ingredient concentration, and color. We send lab samples for your approval.

Step 2: Packaging Design (Weeks 1-2) Our design team creates bottle shapes, label artwork, and carton designs based on your brand identity and local market preferences. You get digital proofs for approval before any tooling starts.

Step 3: Compliance Documentation (Weeks 2-3) We prepare all regulatory documentation for your target market: product registration dossiers, lab test reports, free sale certificates, and MSDS. This is the step that trips up most first-time OEM buyers. With JOBY, it is handled.

Step 4: Production (Weeks 3-4) Once you approve the lab sample and packaging proofs, production begins. Standard lead time from approval to container loading is 14-21 days. Rush orders available at 10-14 days.

Step 5: Shipping & Documentation (Week 4-5) Your container ships with complete documentation: Certificate of Origin, Bill of Lading, packing list, commercial invoice, and all regulatory certificates.

What It Costs

A typical first OEM order:

ItemEstimated Cost
Formula development$0 (included for orders >1 container)
Packaging design$0 (included for orders >1 container)
Mold/tooling (if custom bottle)$500-2,000 (one-time)
Product (20GP mixed)$8,000-15,000
Shipping$2,000-5,000 (port-dependent)
Total first order$10,500-22,000

Compare this to building your own manufacturing facility: $500,000 minimum.

5 Mistakes First-Time OEM Buyers Make

1. Ordering too much of one SKU. Start with at least 4-5 SKUs in smaller quantities. You don’t know which will be your bestseller until you test the market.

2. Copying a competitor’s packaging. This creates legal risk and brand confusion. Invest in original design. It costs less than you think.

3. Skipping the lab sample stage. Always test lab samples before production. A fragrance that works in a Chinese lab may smell different in 35°C West African humidity.

4. Ignoring regulatory requirements. Every country has different rules for importing cleaning products. Let us handle compliance — it is what we do every day for 100+ countries.

5. Undervaluing packaging quality. In emerging markets, packaging IS the brand. A premium bottle and label can justify a 20-30% price premium over a generic-looking competitor.

FAQ

Q: What is the minimum order quantity for OEM?

A: One 20GP container. This is roughly 800-1,200 cases depending on product type and packaging size. We do not require the large minimums that many manufacturers demand.

Q: Can I use JOBY’s formula but with my own brand name?

A: Yes. This is the most common OEM scenario. You get JOBY’s proven formulations with your own brand packaging. Custom formula modifications are also available.

Q: Who owns the formula and packaging designs?

A: You own the packaging design rights for your brand. The base formula is JOBY’s intellectual property, but your brand-specific modifications and fragrance profiles remain exclusive to your market.
